Spineless Yucca

Super Plant of The Mayas

LATIN NAME: YUCCA ELEPHANTIPES

HOME LAND: CENTRAL AMERICA

Yucca Elephantipes grows widely and naturally in a geography extending from the whole of Central America, which is its homeland, partly to the south of North America and partly to the northern regions of South America.

Yucca Elephantipes, a perennial plant that is resistant to drought and endemic to the Central American Region, can be distinguished by its sharp sword-shaped leaves and white flowers, and is a plant that can adapt to almost any climate and geography.

Also known as Flore de Izote in its homeland Mexico, the plant is named as Yucca Elephantipes in botanical science, as well as Dragon Yucca and kown with more than 40 different names like Spanish bayonet, Joshua tree, banana yucca, Adam's needle, Spanish dagger, needle-palm, spoon-leaved yucca, soft-tipped yucca, mojave yucca, Don Quixote's spear, soapgrass yucca and many more.

The yucca plant, needs foremost its thick and deep roots and then the help of the moths called yucca moth in order to reproduce itself in the geography where it groows naturally by carrying the pollen to other flowers while these moths lay eggs on the white flowers of the yucca, which have a pleasant soap-like scent. This situation is valid only for Central America, which is the natural habitat of the yucca plant, and it is ensured that they are reproduced with scientific methods in the rest of the world.

Although it is mostly known as an ornamental plant outside its homeland today, the yucca plant, which is used as a raw material in many fields from pharmacology to the food and cosmetics sector. Its found in our drinks, soaps and shampoos, especially in our diabetes and cholesterol drugs.

Frite isote dish, which is made from yuccaa roots in Central American regional cuisine, may surprise many people with its similarity to french fries at first glance and, its leaves and flowers are among the important ingredients of Central American regional cuisine.

Did you know that the Mayans, the mysterious civilization of Central America, have known all this for thousands of years?

The method that the Mayans used to strengthen the terraces and against landslides due to its strong and deep roots, apart from the temple decoration, is still used against landslides in South American coffee terraces today.

A kind of wrap made by wrapping and cooking different ingredients in yucca leaves called "Tamales", whose history is thought to date back to the Mayans, is a very popular dish in Central America.

We do not know whether the Mayans were aware of the component called saponin in the yucca plant, but we do know that they used the root and leaves as pulp and used them as soap and shampoo.

It is among the interesting information that they used the tea and potions they made from the flowers and fresh leaves as cough medicine and pain reliever.
